In 1987, as the Iran-Iraq War raged on, with both Iraq and Iran targeting oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, the United States Navy began Operation Earnest Will to protect Kuwaiti oil tankers and ensure the supply of oil in the Persian Gulf was not heavily disrupted.
Almost one year into Operation Earnest Will, a series of provocations by the Iranian Navy and an unfortunate case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time would lead to tragedy for Iran Air Flight 655. Mistaken for an Iranian F-14 Tomcat, the airliner was shot down by the cruiser USS Vincennes, killing all 290 on board and precipitating a diplomatic incident between the United States and the hostile Islamic Republic of Iran.
Please note that this program was made around 1999/2000. The USS Vincennes was decommissioned in 2005 and scrapped in 2011.
