In 1812, Napoleon stood triumphant over Continental Europe, having subjugated his Russian, Prussian, and Austrian allies 7 years earlier in the great battles of Austerlitz and Jena-Auerstadt. Yet, despite having come to terms with the Russians at the Treaty of Tilsit in 1807, relations between Napoleon and Tsar Aleksandr I had deteriorated over the 5 years in between.
It was thus in 1812 that Napoleon made the fateful decision to invade the Russian Empire, thus taking him on the disastrous road to Moscow and his eventual downfall and exile in 1814.
