On December 17, 1944, as the Battle of the Bulge raged on, American soldiers in the Belgian town of Malmedy were shocked when escaping American prisoners-of-war stumbled into the town. They told a horrifying tale of how the German SS soldiers of Kampfgruppe Peiper they surrendered to had instructed the POWs to assemble in a field before opening fire with machine guns. Their story of the massacre was subsequently confirmed when the Americans captured the area where it happened, the bodies of the American POWs preserved in the cold snow: 124 dead in total. It was just one of many atrocities the Nazis committed during the six long years of the Second World War.
Please note that this program was made in 1995. As of 2020, one survivor of the Malmedy massacre is believed to remain alive: Pvt. Harold Billow (age 97).
