The Unity game engine recently uneviled a brand-new Runtime Fee that has gone down like a wet fart at a funeral. Developers of all shapes and sizes have condemned the engine, and even announced plans to switch their projects to Unity's direct competitors, such as Godot and Unreal.

Is this outcry justified, or is this the typical over-dramatised, sensationalist, drama? As a solo developer of an indie game called Crisis island, I sat down and seriously investigated what Unity's new fees mean for me, my game and the project's future.
