The genre of metallic hardcore (aka metalcore) has been consumed in droves by metal fans since the late 80's. It invigorated us with its unique fusion of metal, hardcore, grindcore & HUGE breakdowns. AND, we were fortuitous enough to see MANY great bands emerge from that turbulent bosom; bands like: As I Lay Dying, Earth Crisis, Every Time I Die & Silent Civilian to name a choice handful. But, what has become quite evident is that many of these GREAT bands have also succumb to the pressures of both a saturated market & a lack of self-identity. However, ONE band has continued to fly the flag PROUDLY & properly,....& through their own durability (& clout) have been able to, not only persevere through a 25 year career, but have continued to deliver music that reeks of integrity & character. Boston's Unearth is that band! On May 5th, 2023 the band delivered their 8th official full length record with the 'The Wretched; The Ruinous' (via Century Media Records) & have yet again proven why when you speak of metalcore their name is almost synonymous with the genre. In truth, I had been anticipating this record for quite some time, since last supporting the band in 2018 (at the Alamo City Music Hall); because I knew it would be nothing less than spectacular,....& it was. SO, when the band came through San Antonio on July 6th, 2023 I knew I needed to sit down with my old friend, singer, Trevor Phipps to talk about it ALL. The interview below was conducted the day after the band's performance at the Holiday Inn (on Cesar Chavez Blvd) before the band left town, so it was a nice (& facilitating) place for a wondrous chat. You will see us discuss the following: how the pandemic delayed the release, broadening the band's sound, the departure of long time rhythm guitarist, Ken Susi, lyrical themes, touring, their 25 year career, eating humus & LOTS MORE!
