Sometimes understanding our own childhood means understanding what was happening to our parents at the time. The roles they were expected to fill, the support they did or did not have, and the pressures they were carrying all shaped the environment we grew up in. Looking back with that wider context can help us make sense of parts of our story that were hard to understand as children.
