This collection of folklore was recorded and produced by Michael Fortune and Aileen Lambert, facilitated by The GAFF and supported by The Arts Council, Limerick Arts Office, St. Mary's National School and Thomond Primary School.
00:00 – Introduction. Funny bit where Mick asks if they are superstitious. Tyler tells him about spirits.
00:30 – Tyler talks about The Banshee. He recalls how he learnt the story off the video Mick and Aileen made 20 years ago!!
01:07 – The Headless Horseman had his head taken off by The Butcher Man.
02:25 – Tyler ‘suggests’ what Cheaynne should tell Mick and then asks him to cut the video! Very funny, and then he asks me to ‘ax’ him instead of her. ‘Ax’ and ‘axed’ is a very old pronunciation of ‘ask’. Great to hear.
02:59 – Tyler talks about The Green Lady. He has a ritual on how to hear her. He also has The Bloody Mary story (looking into a mirror) mixed in with The Green Lady. Cheaynne has the story too. They also have it that she breathes on your neck and scrapes you on the jaw or the shoulder. He then tells Mick they found her body.
04:38 – Tyler talks about the construction work being done on the bank and the body of The Green Lady being found — and how they’ll put it in a glass case so she can’t get out!
05:08 – They talk about The Witch and her handprints on the bridge.
05:24 – Tyler talks about a spirit that washes bloody clothes at night. Mick asks who this spirit is, but Tyler says he doesn’t know. Cheaynne has a bit of the story too.
06:12 – Tyler talks about The Banshee going out around the Island and only 1 or 2 people can hear her at once. Tyler says he heard her before his grandfather died. RIP. Lovely story and he’s such a great natural storyteller.
06:56 – Mick asks about the woman washing her clothes. They tell me she was caught on camera!
07:29 – Tyler tells me a “newer one” — a story of a box on The Island Field. A fella lives in it and he’d grab you into it. The box has a bottomless hole too, as he mentions if you drop a stone in, it won’t hit the bottom. He says the fella in it just wanted a hug!
08:53 – Knowing the story has legs, Mick asks them both and they come back with more detail and conviction. It’s a bit like a Venus flytrap — it draws you in, then grabs you and swallows you. When it does that, a new box appears. He suggests it could be a homeless man, so maybe the story is coming from somewhere.
09:59 – Cheaynne talks about the witch that fell over Thomond Bridge. It’s a new take on the Bishop’s Lady story. Tyler tells us he got the story from his mother. If you touch the marks, you get bad luck. Funny bendy finger.
11:20 – Bad luck stuff. “Fresh” tackies on a table. Funny bit then about brands.
12:00 – Tyler talks about drinking Holy Water and saying his prayers. Gorgeous stories.
12:42 – They talk about blessing themselves when they see an ambulance. Gorgeous and so honest.
12:51 – Mick asks about Bonfire Night (31st of April). They talk about what they burn. Some editing involved here. Mick asks if it's big boys and girls, and Tyler says it’s the small ones. He says, “We rule.”
13:29 – Great account of "not jocking your horse after 12 o’clock," and Tyler has a story of it being bad luck.
13:51 – Mick asks Tyler to repeat the horse story. He wasn’t impressed at being asked to repeat it, so he slows it down for the craic. Very funny.
14:25 – Mick asks if Tyler blesses his horse. He does, and then he talks about ‘the bag’ the foal is born in. We call it ‘the cleanings’ in Wexford, and he has it that the fox would smell it. Brilliant to hear urban chaps like him with such an understanding of animals and caring for them at such a young age. He talks about his horse “Lion King” and how he uses greyhounds to protect the foal.
16:44 – Tyler talks about his uncle who blesses the car when going on trips — especially if he has a child in it.
