Here’s a first hand account from my late grandmother Jane Fortune where they as children went ‘Gugging for Eggs’ on Easter Saturday in rural townlands of Corbally, near Kilmuckridge, Co. Wexford. This tradition saw them calling to their neighbours house looking for hen/duck eggs reciting the saying ‘My Easter Egg on You’.
She was born in 1912 so these accounts are from the early to mid 1920s and pre-date the Schools Folklore Collection of 1937/38. This isn’t a great recording, camera and sound is poor, but it was only discovered by chance in 2019. This tradition of calling out to get an Easter egg was found all over Wexford and in most cases, the young children called during the day dressed in old clothes, aprons and with a basket/stick.
Older people called at night looking for money or drink. Note the local pronunciation of Easter as ‘Aester’ too - again something found all over the county.
