Lar Crowe - Memories of Life in Ballygarrett
I spent Fridaymorning recording this man, 89 year old Lar Crowe from Ballygarrett - the village where I grew up. The older generation of locals are getting scarce around Ballygarrett so good to have a chat about life in the village in the 1930s to 1960s in particular.
The chat is slow and quiet but has great accounts of local shops, pubs, people and observations on changes in farming from steam engines at threshing to bad weather and harvests. Interesting accounts to of local May Bush dances, going ‘Vizzarding’ at Halloween, insects and birds, funeral customs and sporting memories. Lar ended the 90 minute chat with two songs - Boolavogue and Kelly from Killanne.
The chat mightn't be for everyone but if you are local and know Lar, it'd be worth a listen. I loved the chat as it brought me back to the people and village where I was born and reared. Thanks Lar.
