Why Friday was a bad day for a Spring Threshing!!
This is brilliant folks.
Here is something that Rita Tighe from outside Carnew told me back in 2021 about how 'some' farmers had their Spring threshings on a Friday! Now - I've met so many people here in Wexford who hated a Spring threshing on a Friday as it was a non-meat day and instead of a the bacon, you'd get pickled herrings!
The Spring threshings would have been around February/early March time where the oats/corn was threshed to get seed to sow for the upcoming growing season. It was also said - that any farmer who had a Friday threshing was a bit tight as it was cheaper to feed the workers herrings that day than meat!
