Seventy-six-year-old Francis tells me the dresser was brought from the old house to the new one by his grandparents — a distance of just a few yards. Like others in the area, it has some tell-tale design features to locate it to this part of Galway, such as the bottom shelf for large platters, the lack of plate laths and door design.
It also has a wide bed and stepped-in shoulders, and could well be the work of the same hand that made some of the other dressers in the calendar. Francis uses the dresser daily, and I love his use of contact on the bed of the dresser, behind the doors, and on the shelves. The press beside the dresser is also very striking.
