This is the first piece I wrote for the Doom project 'Panophobia,' which is still currently unreleased. In Panophobia, the levels represent different fears, and the levels are grouped into pairs; the odd-numbered maps are short Hellish preludes, before entering the proper levels themselves which occupy the even-numbered slots.
I wrote three "main level" themes for the project, including this one, as well as a 15-part suite (collectively simply titled 'Panophobia') for each of the prelude maps. This suite is not part of the main remake project, because the map order in Panophobia isn't finalised and the individual parts are yet to move around, and I may still make changes to some of the compositions, so I'm going to leave that one until Panophobia is released.
This piece accompanies 'Gluttonous Myriad,' dobu's take on decidophobia, the fear of making decisions. Although it's extremely unfinished, I was given the green light to show what currently exists, and since I'm not playing any instruments in this remake, I figured I'd do something different for the video this time. Although I'm deliberately playing badly in the video and sometimes with modified monster behaviour/damage for presentation purposes, it really does often feel like a map where every decision you make is the wrong one.
To represent the fear of decision making musically, I opted for a really simple melody that repeats over and over again throughout the piece, consisting of four notes: A, E, D - with the fourth note alternating between G# and Bb. The piece also has section where it constantly changes key, playing sets of four minor triads with the roots forming the tones of a diminished seventh chord, with the root of the dim7 also changing often. There's also some bouncy panning of instruments, such as the bowed pads, the bells, and how the marimba + celesta flow from left to right, opposite each other during the dim7 sections. It's a pretty weird piece for me, but I like how it came out, and same goes for this remake.
Indecision was written in a single day - May 27, 2017, and when I finished it I started writing A Warrior Reborn immediately afterwards; such a productive weekend, heh. A few days later I started on the 15-part suite, working on it on and off until February 2018. The other 2 pieces are also both from early 2018, so it shouldn't be too long until they surface here!
Thanks everyone very much for listening, hope you enjoyed this piece, and I'll see you all again in two weeks for the re-release of 'A Warrior Reborn!'
