This a short piece originally written in the autumn of 2016, a conscious attempt at breaking away from slower and longer pieces that had become the norm for my standalone works. As can be inferred from the title, the feel I was going for was a colder autumn, but in contrast to my usual portrayal of autumn and winter (The End of Summer, most of Arctic Voyage, etc) I wanted an upbeat feel. The result was pretty close to "Beneath the Stars," but I didn't mind that.
This was a very easy track to remake, and I feel it's one of my strongest mixes so far, so I'm extremely happy with this, because things slowed down a lot when I started getting into the 2016 work. We are now about 60% through the remake list, I believe, with quite a few shorter and simpler pieces to come. That said I'm also starting university next month and with a borderline overbearing number of projects already, I probably won't be powering through this stuff.
One notable change in this remake from the original is the solo - before it was a guitar. The thing is, my MIDI keyboard which you see in most videos arrived during the original writing of this track, so Autumnal Chills was the one time I recorded a solo directly through the keyboard on to a MIDI file - I later decided I didn't like this and never did it again, though I still use the keyboard to place notes in MIDIs, and it has saved so much time. But yeah, it was a guitar solo originally played on a keyboard, and well, you know by now guitar isn't my favourite instrument :))) Rather than grind the process of practicing the solo for hours with the guitar, I just made it into a synth solo instead, because let's face it, this was two years ago - the extent of my keyboard ability back then is now very easy by comparison. I was just coming back to keyboard after a 2 year absence when this track was written.
The bass was very fun to record, this happened to come around at a time where I rediscovered how much I like these kinds of longer, melodic bass fills and stuff.
