The TITANIC Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee - The RMS Titanic—operated by the White Star Line—set sail on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City. At the time, she was the largest ship afloat, designed to be the pinnacle of comfort and luxury. Her advanced safety features, including watertight compartments and remotely operated watertight doors, led many to believe she was unsinkable.
However, at 11:40 p.m. on April 14, 1912 (ship’s time), Titanic struck an iceberg along her starboard side. The collision caused hull plates below the waterline to buckle and separate, allowing water to pour into the ship. It quickly became clear that she would not survive the damage.
In the early hours of April 15, 1912, at 2:20 a.m., the Titanic sank into the Atlantic Ocean. Approximately 1,500 people lost their lives in the disaster, while around 712 survived.
