The two flags raised on Iwo Jima. On February 23, 1945 a smaller American flag was raised on Mount Suribachi. A larger flag was sent to the top of Mount Suribachi to replace the smaller flag and make it more visible around the island of Iwo Jima. The larger flag being raised was captured by Joe Rosenthal in still photo and Sergeant Bill Genaust in motion film. On rare occasions both flags are placed on display at the National Museum of the Marine Corp.
