During Operation Market Garden, the British 1st Airborne Division was tasked with capturing the Arnhem Bridge. However, the rapid response of German forces prevented many British troops from reaching Arnhem. As the airborne units withdrew, they regrouped within a defensive perimeter centered on Oosterbeek.
As scattered units arrived in the area, they were organized into an ad hoc formation known as Lonsdale Force, commanded by Richard Lonsdale. These troops were assigned to defend the southeastern sector of the perimeter near the Old Church, a position of critical importance because it overlooked the Rhine River.
Hundreds of wounded British paratroopers were brought to the church and surrounding buildings, which were transformed into makeshift field hospitals. Nearby stood the old rectory, home to Kate ter Horst, who became known as the “Angel of Arnhem” for her tireless efforts caring for wounded British soldiers.
The Old Church would later play another vital role during Operation Berlin, serving as one of the evacuation points during the withdrawal of British forces across the Rhine on the night of September 25–26, 1944.
