If you’ve ever been to Mauritius, you might remember seeing gateau piment being sold on the streets, still warm, passed over in small paper bags. It’s one of those everyday snacks that’s always within reach.
These fritters are made from soaked yellow split peas, ground with chilli, onion and herbs, then fried until crisp outside and fluffy inside. Simple, but very satisfying.
In this video, I’ll walk you through the whole process, from preparing the dal to shaping and frying the fritters, with a few tips along the way.

✿ INGREDIENTS
• Yellow split peas (dal)
• Cilantro / Coriander
• Green onion
• Fennel seeds
• Salt
• Cumin
• Green chillies or chilli flakes
• Oil for frying
✿ NOTES
• Red lentils can be used as a substitute with a shorter soaking time
• Avoid adding excess water when grinding
• Keep some texture in the mixture for best results
