What is the footstrike pattern of Kelvin Kiptum when he ran the second fastest marathon ever?
-
Footstrike pattern refers to which part of the foot first touches the ground.
Just note that this happens in miliseconds, so the limited quality of the footage makes it hard to get the exact details.
During this particular aspect of the race, he actually presents with a slightly different footstrike pattern on each side.
On the right, he seems to present with a mid to forefoot strike.
On the left, he presents with a mid to rearfoot strike.
This affects how forces are distributed in the leg.
A forefoot landing shifts forces closer to the calf and foot.
A rearfoot landing shifts forces closer to the knee and hip.
Now, is foot strike pattern something you should think about when you are racing?
Just look at this face.
How he lands is probably the last thing on his mind.
So the lesson here is to stop overthinking how you land!
