Hydration plays a critical role for preventing something severe like a heat stroke, but performance as well.
There was an interesting study in 1985 that actually involved the use of diuretic drugs to understand the effects of dehydration on running performance.
To put this simply, dehydration can significantly influence a number of factors, which correlated to slower times.
This impact was even larger with longer distance races.
For more of the details on this particular study:
Armstrong LE, Costill DL, Fink WJ. Influence of diuretic-induced dehydration on competitive running performance. Med Sci Sports Exerc. 1985 Aug;17(4):456-61. doi: 10.1249/00005768-198508000-00009. PMID: 4033401.nge based on things like how fast you are running, the terrain you are running in, and your own unique anatomy (limb length).
