Big floods can have effects that reach beyond the river channels they follow. This video shows how one of Hurricane Helene's river floods caused large-scale ground movement well beyond the riverbanks. Whether or not this area will be stable in the future is hard to know. While it is unlikely to ever cause a huge, river-damming landslide, slow ground movement may continue years into the future. This video shows how flooding effects reach far up hillsides using a diagram drawn in the field.
