The Appalachians are ancient and deeply eroded, but some of the sedimentary rock ridges in the western part of the range are likely Earth's longest and skinniest mountains. This video tells the story of their formation and shows how long the ridges actually area. Lidar shows some details of the rock layers that actually "hold up" the ridges. It doesn't take much of a specific type of rock to create a dominant mountain in this part of the world.
