FoundMyFitness | The Underlying Mechanisms of Depression @FoundMyFitness | Uploaded February 2017 | Updated October 2024, 5 hours ago.
This is a story about depression... and an important mechanism that emerging research shows may have a very interesting relationship with this condition that affects so many people. That mechanism is systemic inflammation. Inflammation can be caused by emotional/social stress, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, lack of sleep and more.
While we may find out that there's more going on in this condition than *just* inflammation, as a potential therapeutic target for a lifestyle intervention, inflammation holds a lot of promise. This is because it is something that is easily biologically quantifiable, affected by a wide variety of lifestyle changes... and also because evidence shows that low inflammation also has a very important relationship with successful aging and health in general.
