Mary the Elephant was a five ton asian elephant that performed in a traveling circus being touted as the largest land animal on earth. She was the centerpiece of this circus and would be front and center in their parades and events. While at a stop in northeast Tennessee, she threw her handler off of her and trampled him to death. Chants grew from onlookers, calling for the execution of the elephant. Protests erupted and towns slated for the circus' next stops weren't going to allow the show to go on if Mary was in attendance. The decision was made to have Mary hanged for her crimes.
