One of the more overlooked aspects of the sinking of the Titanic was the lights and communications staying online until the very end. The crew behind this feat saved lives but with the price of losing their own.

While the Titanic was sinking, there was a certain crew that worked tirelessly to keep the lights on and other necessary systems going until the very end. Joseph Bell, chief engineer of the Titanic engine room, and his fellow engineers urged the stokers and firemen to keep the boilers going to keep the ship powered for as long as possible, to send distress signals and keep the lights on to make getting onto the upper decks for an ecape even possible. No one in this crew made it off of the ship alive then again, it wasn’t necessary an expectation and more of a sacrifice. Historical record says that once it became clear that nothing else could be done, some of the engineers made it up to Titanic’s open well deck. By this point, all lifeboats had departed. They would go down with their ship knowing that their actions saved lives.
