Many people have seen the Hollywood film The Thin Red Line. The story takes place right here on Guadalcanal, in an area known as The Thin Red Line, or more commonly, Galloping Horse.
One memorable scene from the movie shows a small group of soldiers assaulting a Japanese bunker high on the ridges of Galloping Horse. In reality, that daring attack was led by Captain Charles W. Davis, accompanied by just four other soldiers.
Crawling to within only ten yards of the Japanese position, Davis and his men launched their assault, driving the enemy from their fortified post. Inspired by their courage, nearby American troops charged forward and seized the final hill of Galloping Horse, marking a decisive moment in the battle for Guadalcanal.
