During Operation Market Garden in September 1944 the British paratroopers formed a defensive position in Oosterbeek. The northern tip of this position was located at the Hotel Dreyeroord also known as the White House. Very heavy fighting between the British Glider troops / paratroopers and the Germans took place in this area. The hotel was heavily damaged during the battle but after the war it was renovated. The original building was demolished in 2018 and in 2019 a new building was built to look just like the Hotel Dreyeroord of World War II
