The Orange Beach two cemetery was established very early in the Battle of Peleliu. The location was chosen due to the large number of casualties on and near the beach. The cemetery is located approximately 40 yards inland from the beach. In the fall of 1944 the cemetery contained the remains of one thousand fifty eight men. In 1947 all were repatriated either to the United States, Hawaii or to a location depending on the wishes of the next of kin. Today two monuments to the Army’s 81st Infantry Division are located here along with the Flag pole and the remains of the chapel building.
