360° Tour – Japanese Airfield Bomb Shelter, Peleliu
You're now standing at one of the the most visited sites on Peleliu—the Japanese Airfield Bomb Shelter.
During World War II, this area was part of a major Japanese airfield complex. Scattered throughout the surrounding jungle are multiple reinforced bomb shelters like this one—many now overgrown and hidden from plain view.
These heavily fortified bunkers are about 60 feet long and 10 feet wide, with thick blast walls protecting the main entrance and smaller escape hatches at either end. Inside, steel doors divide the interior, and firing ports were built into the walls to allow defenders to repel attacks from within.
Originally constructed to protect Japanese personnel during bombing raids, many of these shelters were later captured and repurposed by American forces.
After securing the airfield, U.S. troops turned some of these bunkers into command posts, aid stations, and temporary shelters during Japanese artillery and mortar attacks.
