The Battle of Belleau Wood (1–26 June 1918) took place during the German Spring Offensive of World War I near the Marne River in France. The fighting pitted German forces—including elements of the 237th, 10th, 197th, 87th, and 28th Divisions—against Allied troops, most notably the U.S. 2nd Division, which included a brigade of U.S. Marines under the command of Major General Omar Bundy, as well as the U.S. 3rd Division, supported by French and British forces. The battle later became a defining episode in the history and lore of the United States Marine Corps.
