In one of the most overlooked battles in drag racing history, the 1988 season ignited a full-scale track war in Texas — and the shockwaves are still felt today.
When Billy Meyer purchased the International Hot Rod Association, he made a decisive move by taking his crown jewel — Texas Motorplex — with him. The message was clear: IHRA was ready to challenge NHRA on its own turf.
NHRA responded fast.
Backed by the Angel family, a brand-new supertrack rose just outside Houston — Houston Raceway Park — designed to be NHRA’s answer to the Motorplex. The facility debuted in 1988, the same year Meyer exited NHRA, and immediately became a battleground for prestige, performance, and bragging rights.
The Motorplex made history with the first four-second nitro run, but Houston Raceway Park — aided by its oxygen-rich Gulf Coast atmosphere — quickly proved it could deliver record-shaking performances of its own. What followed was an escalation that pushed nitro racing into uncharted territory and intensified the National Hot Rod Association vs IHRA rivalry like never before.
