In this video I present the case of the strange death of 49 year old Bart Schleyer from Canada's Yukon Territory in September of 2004.
Bart was a very competent and experienced outdoorsman. He was trained as a hunter from a young age by his father, and they would often embark on trips around the world to engage in various hunting expeditions.
Bart graduated from Montana State University in 1979 with a master's degree in wildlife biology. During his time at the university he worked for the interagency grizzly bear study where he learned live bear trapping skills. Later in life many professionals would state that Bart was the most knowledgeable person in the world about bear behavior, tracking and luring.
After college he worked for the Montana Fish + Wildlife Department where he set bear trap lines in the rugged terrain of the Bob Marshall Wilderness.
After this, Bart spent time in Alaska where he learned taxidermy and explored and hunted in the Alaskan wilderness.
Bart then spent time in the far east of Russia, where he trapped and studied Siberian tigers - a skill he became highly proficient at. It was in Russia where he would meet a woman named Tatiana and they had a son.
He then moved to the Yukon Territory in Canada where he took up bowhunting in Canada's vast northern expanse.
On September 14, 2004 Bart was dropped off by plane in the Reid Lakes area, and he was to spend 2 weeks there hunting and exploring the region around the lakes.
When his plane came to pick him up 2 weeks later on September 28, the pilot could not find Bart. The tent at his campsite was knocked down and it didn't look like many supplies had been used. The pilot contacted the RCMP who then contacted Bart's family and friends. The initial police search was limited - the RCMP flew over the region briefly and that was it.
When Bart's friends arrived at the scene they immediately searched directly across the lake from Bart's camp. Here they found Bart's boat, and a bit inland from this they found a bag of his gear and his bow and arrows. They also found a camouflaged face mask with some blood on it. At this point they called the RCMP back to the scene.
On October 3, 2004 RCMP and conservation officers initiated a massive grid search of the area around the lakes. They found a partial skull and some teeth, which were positively identified as belonging to Bart. They also found a camera, a pair of camouflage pants and some small bones.
There was a significant amount of bear and wolf scat found at the scene, and this was taken to a lab to be tested. Interestingly, no clothing was found in the scat - when bears eat people they eat everything, and clothing and jewelry show up in the scat.
There were also no signs of a struggle at the site, no blood on the ground or drags marks that would indicate an animal attack. Investigators said it wasn't obvious that he was attacked by an animal. Many investigators and people close to the case believed Bart had been killed prior to the animals finding his body.
The coroner said that the skull did not have any bite or puncture marks on it. They also said that without tissue present it was extremely difficult to figure out what happened to Bart, and they were not able to officially state his cause of death.
Richard Farnell, a wildlife biologist who spent 25 years working in the Yukon, is quoted as saying "This was really, really an odd case" in regards to the death of Bart Schleyer.
