A peaceful family moment at the Okaukuejo waterhole in Etosha National Park.
While the adult elephants enjoyed a refreshing drink, one tiny calf remained safely surrounded by the herd. Young elephants stay close to their mothers and other family members for protection, guidance and reassurance as they slowly learn how to navigate life in the wild.
The difference in size is wonderful to see. Among these gentle giants, the little calf looks incredibly small, but it could hardly be in safer company.
Moments like this remind us that an elephant herd is more than a group of animals. It is a closely connected family that supports and protects its youngest members.
