The aardwolf is one of Africa’s most unusual and misunderstood predators. Despite belonging to the hyena family, this shy nocturnal animal feeds mainly on termites and other insects rather than hunting large prey.
Found across parts of East and Southern Africa, the aardwolf uses its long sticky tongue to consume thousands of termites in a single night. Its name means “earth-wolf” in Afrikaans and Dutch, while it is also known locally as the “maanhaarjakkals” or termite-eating hyena.
With its striped coat, erect mane, and cautious behavior, the aardwolf is rarely seen in the wild, making every sighting a special moment in the African bush.
