Three spotted hyenas visit the Namib Desert waterhole during the night. At first glance, it may look like simple drinking behaviour but watch closely and you will notice how often they stop, lift their heads, look around, listen, and then continue drinking.
Even though hyenas are powerful predators, they are not completely relaxed at a waterhole. Waterholes are high-traffic areas where many animals leave scent, sound, and movement behind. They can also attract other predators and competitors.
Spotted hyenas are especially alert because they often share the landscape with lions, which are their biggest competitors and can kill hyenas during conflicts. Research shows that hyenas change their behaviour when lions are present, and studies from Etosha have recorded lions as a major cause of hyena deaths. This is why even a predator must pause, scan the area, listen, and drink in short bursts.
This quiet night scene is a good reminder that in the wild, drinking is never a completely relaxed moment even for a hunter.
