After a good amount of rain and abundant natural water sources across the landscape, wildlife is slowly beginning to return to the waterhole.

Today's visitors included a large herd of Gemsbok, several Hartmann's mountain zebras, a lone blue wildebeest, jackals, and warthogs. As seasonal pools dry up and vegetation becomes less lush, permanent water sources once again become important gathering points for many species.

Waterholes play a critical role in Namibia's arid ecosystems. They provide reliable access to water and often become meeting places where different animals, each with their own behaviours and survival strategies, can be observed side by side.

The Gemsbok, Namibia's national animal, is remarkably adapted to dry conditions and can survive for long periods with little direct water. Zebras, however, require more regular access to water and often travel considerable distances to drink. Jackals frequently patrol waterholes in search of opportunities, while warthogs visit to drink and cool themselves during warmer parts of the day.

Days like this offer a fascinating glimpse into how wildlife responds to seasonal changes in the Kalahari and surrounding landscapes.
