The infamous theft of the Irish crown jewels from Dublin Castle in 1907 has become one of Ireland’s most enduring royal mysteries, but what do we think happened to the insignia of the Order of St Patrick, how were they broken out of a safe in the Bedford Tower, who are the prime suspects in the theft and why did no one notice that the jewels were gone for weeks until they were needed for a visit from the King?
In this historical mystery documentary from History Calling I take you back to Edwardian Ireland to explain what the Irish crown jewels were, then look at the scandal that rocked Ireland and left King Edward VII absolutely livid. You’ll hear about Sir Arthur Vicars, the Ulster King of Arms, who was widely blamed for not securing the jewels better and the tragic fate he met over a decade later, plus the escapes of Francis Shackleton (brother of the famous explorer Ernest Shackleton) and Lord Haddo, son of the Earl of Aberdeen, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
