Is NEW EVIDENCE connected to the disappearance of the Princes in the Tower in 1483 really the smoking gun that it has been called in a Channel 5 documentary co-presented by Tracy Borman? Does it suggest that Richard III killed his nephews (or had them killed) and that Thomas More’s account of what happened to Edward V and Richard, Duke of York (also known as Richard of Shrewsbury) is true; that they were killed by a John Dighton and Miles Forest on the orders of Sir James Tyrell who was himself acting on the orders of King Richard, formerly the Duke of Gloucester?
In this episode of History Calling I review the documentary to see if its claims that Henry VII and Elizabeth of York went to the Tower of London to hear Tyrell’s confession in 1502 and that Thomas More knew Forest’s son hold up to scrutiny and if the discovery of the 1522 will of a Margaret Capel, sister-in-law of James Tyrell, in which a chain is mentioned that supposedly belonged to Edward V, are evidence that More was correct in his assertion that Tyrell arranged the murder. I’ll also consider the documentary’s discussion of bones found at the Tower of London in 1674 (which are believed by many to be the Princes and are now in an urn in Westminster Abbey) and whether a modern assessment of a description of them from the 1930s can shed any further light on their origins. It’s one of the biggest royal mysteries of all time, but are we finally one step close to solving the likely murder of the Princes in the Tower?
