Was PRINCE ALBERT VICTOR Jack the Ripper? There have been many theories put forward over the years regarding the identity of Jack the Ripper, but perhaps none so outlandish as the story that it was none other than the heir to the throne, Prince Albert Victor, eldest son of the future Edward VII and grandson of Queen Victoria. Was Jack the Ripper a royal prince though and where did this story originate? In today’s video from History Calling I share with you the details of how this rumour started and what the real evidence about Albert Victor’s movements during the period in question tell us. I’ll start with a summary of the crimes themselves, explain who the Prince was, then track his known locations during the crime spree to find out if he was in or around London when the five canonical victims of Jack the Ripper (Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Kelly) died.
The reason the Prince is connected with this case at all is largely thanks to an article in The Criminologist magazine in 1970 written by a medical doctor called Dr Thomas E.A. Stowell and I’ll consider what he said in that article and elsewhere about who the infamous Victorian serial killer (whose famous unsolved crimes are also known as the Whitechapel murders) really was and if he truly accused Albert Victor, who was known as Eddy to family and friends. I’ll also look at other stories which focus on Albert Victor, including tales of a secret marriage to a Catholic shopgirl, a baby daughter and a killer doctor with Freemason links called Sir William Gull.
