Monsters of all kinds have captivated the human race for centuries. From creatures that stalk the shadows, hiding behind trees and in dark caves, to great beasts that only the mightiest of men could wrangle, our history is filled with things that go bump in the night.
In America, the Pacific Northwest is haunted by the sasquatch. Shape-shifters known as Wendigo stalk the forests of Minnesota and terrifying dinosaur-like birds fill the skies of the northeast.
But legendary beasts aren’t only on the land.
Ever since the first sailors took to the open sea, tales of the creatures that lurked below the waves have filled volumes of novels. From mermaids, luring ships to their end, to giant squids pulling helpless vessels to the murky depths, the stories served as both entertainment and as cautionary tales.
Over time, the legends grew to include other bodies of water. From Loch Ness in Scotland to the shores of Lake Erie in Ohio, tales of mysterious creatures surfaced all around the world. Some of them, like Champy, the monster that calls Lake Champlain in New York state home, would become mascots for tourism, while others would fade into obscurity.
It’s easy to dismiss reports of these creatures, sometimes described as leviathans or even compared to the ancient Plesiosaurus, as nothing more than misidentification or even outright hoaxes. But what if there really is something lurking below the waves?
Today we’re stepping back in time, to the 1870’s, to look at a case of one potential river monster. Sightings of the beast would garner attention nationwide, but its fame would die as quickly as it rose. Now, nearly a century and a half later, the few who’ve actually heard the story are left to wonder, what did dozens of people actually witness in the fall of 1877?
