I've encountered a lot of new/smaller authors who plan to make their books free on Amazon, or who have been "selling" them for free there already. If they aren't giving away the eBook versions, they're selling the physical copies at the lowest price possible, just hoping to make sales based on the low price. This tactic feels like it would be wise, people are always looking for deals after all, but it's not really as good as it seems.
The truth is, pricing your books as a self-published author is no easy task. You have to focus on finding the sweet spot between making a profit and making good sales. Each book is going to have a different price point that is just right based on things like the genre, page count, market demand and other factors. While I can't tell you exactly what the price of your book should be, I can give you a starting point based on research and knowledge of finance.
The biggest thing to remember is that people will often perceive value based on price. If something is offered for free or at a really low price, especially a book on Amazon, a lot of people will pass it up as they assume low price equals low quality. If they do grab it to take advantage of the free price tag, they are likely to add it to their library and never get around to reading it. A book priced fairly, around the same price as comparable books, is more likely to sell and actually be read than a book offered for free.
but pricing is only one part, and in the next video we'll be talking about marketing strategies to help actually raise interest in your book so people know it exists in the first place.
