A playthrough of Sunsoft's 1991 adventure game for the PC Engine CD, The Manhole.
The Manhole is an interactive point-and-click storybook adventure in which you'll encounter all manner of wild things, like a 70s pimp dragon who wears a medallion nestled in scraggly chest hair welcoming you to his pad with a plate of biscuits, Batman golfing to an NES cover of a theme from his PC Engine game (youtu.be/4iRzKDxv1Ag), and a half-buried arcade game named "City Panther" bathed in the glow of a dubiously placed street light in a field.
Starting out as a 1988 monochrome Mac title made with Hyper Card, the original version of The Manhole was the first game from Cyan, a small American developer that later went on to create Myst. The 1991 CD remake was made by Sunsoft, and it was this collaboration between the companies that laid the groundwork for Sunsoft's handling of the console ports of Myst in the mid 90s (youtu.be/wm9mUxxy_Go).
Instead of motivating you with an overarching story or a goal, The Manhole is all about exploring a fun little world and seeing whatever is there is to be seen. Nearly everything you find can be clicked on for a sound bite, animation, or minigame. It's more a toy than a traditional game - an early example of what would later come to be known as a "multimedia experience" - and the remake makes good use of the power of the CD format to bring it all alive.
It also conveniently includes an option to switch 99% of the game to English, so it's completely playable without any knowledge of Japanese. (I subtitled a few of the images that only display Japanese text).
So yeah, The Manhole. It's neat.
