The Goten & Trunks Problem

These two since their introduction have been known as super prodigies that had potential surpassing their fathers and even Gohan at the time, before they decided to make Gohan THE super prodigy. They were shown in Dragon Ball Super Super Hero and are now portrayed to be Earths strongest, but how did we even get here? Today, I’ll be not only breaking down how Goten and trunks not only got wasted but why it’s actually way worse when you actually think about it. Now as you guys know I do like scaling on the channel and for this video it actually does kinda play a factor in my reasoning, as they could’ve easily been relevant because of how they were introduced. So firstly, we see Goten training with Gohan in preparation for the upcoming world tournament. Goten unlike Gohan doesn’t really focus on studying and is more like Goku, which led into him training with his mom shown in the anime, and eventually then Gohan himself. Sources even state that he has power rivaling that of gohans, which is further shown when Goten after getting mad and going super saiyan because Gohan was making fun of him, he nearly tagged Gohan and was shown actually fighting his super saiyan state. A lot of you may say that this Gohan would be holding back which obviously he wouldn’t be trying to kill his brother, but neither would Goten obviously. And for those who may say that this Gohan is a lot weaker so it doesn’t matter, it actually does when you consider that this Gohan is only weaker compared to his ssj2 teen self, who was not only powered by ssj2 but also his rage that he finally managed to control. Due to Gohan not training he couldn’t maintain this rage anymore, which is why he’s considered weaker. And for those who may point to the mighty mask thing, those two were in a costume and couldn’t actually fight properly, and even then they could still fight her very well. + Android 18 was also training for the tournament so she definitely could’ve gotten stronger. Goten and Trunks as well pretty much earth's last hope after Vegeta and Gohan were out of the picture, showing that he’s stronger than not only 18 but also Piccolo himself. We already saw him being capable of not only surpassing the super Saiyans but doing about as well as vegeta and trunks against the cell jrs. And as we see later on in super they just train with Cell JRS anyway. So yes, even as 8 year old kids, they were surpassing Goku and Gohan going into the cell games as crazy as it sounds. And so now that you Trunks are aware of how strong they are, let's talk about how it all goes downhill from here. Now trunks and Goten initially are actually very solid, we get a wholesome scene with Goten and Goku, we get to see how this version of trunks mainly embraces that cockiness his father had and even what his future self briefly showed off. Their fight is very fun and really everything before the Gotenks is pretty solid. Now the moment these two fuse, it goes downhill from here. Gotenks due to being a fusion of two children is really arrogant and it leads to him fumbling against super buu before he could get the job done. This doesn’t bother me completely but it does add onto one of the biggest problems of this arc and that’s the pacing.A nd then he gets absorbed even after Piccolo was warning them. And what do they do for the rest of the arc? They’re either inside of buu or raising their hands to give energy. The thing is I wouldn’t even be too mad if they give Goten and Trunks at least the roles as earth's defenders. But do you want to know what goten and trunks do for the first half of Super? They hit captain ginyu in the nuts, and fight ocean dub vegeta in what is possibly the worst arc in the whole show. I don’t even want to get too much detail into this but yeah, just know this all sucks. And then we get the Goku black arc where the only thing we got was Present Trunks trying to talk to Future Trunks. And then in the biggest tournament of their life with them needing the strongest fighters they can get, we get Roshi and Krillin before Goten and trunks. And the reason? Oh they’re too young. TOO YOUNG? Goten and Trunks here actually do play a bigger role in the story and are pretty much the new Saiyamen protecting the city. Goten and Trunks are training again and they were sparring with Broly Goku Vegeta and Gohan, who’re quite literally the top 4 strongest Saiyans around. Besides these 4 and piccolo, they really are the next line of defense that earths got, and it’s nice to see them finally fulfilling the roles they were supposed to since the Buu Saga. It’s just unfortunate that it happened too late, meaning a lot in retrospect doesn’t mean all that much.
