Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! =) Here are two Christmas-themed songs: "The Golden Carol" and, "I Saw Three Ships." They both have a similar hornpipe vibe, so I thought I'd make a little medley with both of them. Both are old English Christmas carol melodies, but one is a major song, and the other is a minor song.
I almost never hear "The Golden Carol." It's a really beautiful and haunting minor carol. Because it had such a haunting vibe to it, I thought I'd try to add some night footage with some Christmas lights. I'm new to the world of low-light footage, so hopefully it turned out okay. There's something really unique about a dark-sounding minor Christmas song during such a festive time.
"I Saw Three Ships" is in a major key, and the melody sounds a bit more jolly. I often hear people playing it faster than I do in this video. I didn't want to bend the tempo throughout the medley, and I thought that The Golden Carol sounded better played a little slower. I hope I came up with a tempo that bridged the two songs okay. =)
I think I'm pretty happy with how my Sony RX100 mV camera behaved in the low-light, and how well the new de-noiser effect works in the latest Final Cut Pro X update (now, if only they'd add an automatic keyframe tracking tool....). The slow-motion snow footage turned out neat, too! The snow was actually blowing around pretty hard, so to see it drifting so slowly and peacefully is interesting lol!
I also had only one "nice weather day" to film this video, so I feel really lucky that I was able to film something outside! :o All the other days were too cold and/or snowy to bring my violin outside. I'm glad my footage didn't end up lost, corrupted, or deleted, too! That's happened before...lol!
This is also my first video with audio recorded using "Pirastro Oliv Violin Strings" (gut strings). So far, I like how the A, D, and E harmonics ring, and I like the D-string, but I do miss my Evah Pirazzis... The Oliv strings will bend the string's pitch flat depending on where you place your bow on the contact point + bow speed. It makes them a bit tricky, but maybe I just need to adjust my playing? :/ I'll give these a go for a few months, and make a review video when it's time to explore a new set of strings. =) I really want to start trying out different kinds of strings to explore different tones and figure out what sounds the best on my violin. :D
