In the late 1980s, a small arcade in New Haven became the center of a string of unsettling rumors. Among the usual flashing cabinets and pinball machines was one that locals remember simply as The Fortune Telling Machine.
It didn’t take coins for fun: it took them for something else.
Witnesses describe it as an old wooden cabinet with a brass plate and a slit for a paper card. Each time you played, the machine would print a personalized fortune: specific, strange, and sometimes disturbingly accurate.
Over one summer, three boys became obsessed with it. What began as a game quickly spiraled into fear, secrecy, and, according to some, something much darker.
The records from that time are incomplete. Police reports were filed. People moved away. But those who still remember The Fortune Telling Machine all say the same thing:
It knew things no one should have known.
This is their story.
