The Fiume Enterprise was a nationalist takeover of the city of Fiume led by Italian poet and war hero Gabriele D’Annunzio from 1919 to 1920. Frustrated by Italy’s perceived mistreatment in the post–World War I peace settlements, D’Annunzio marched on the city with a force of nationalist volunteers and seized control, declaring it Italian despite international opposition. He established a radical, theatrical regime blending ultranationalism, militarism, and early fascist ideas, complete with mass rallies, propaganda, and a unique constitution.
After the Italian government signed the Treaty of Rapallo, designating Fiume as an independent state, D’Annunzio refused to relinquish control. In response, Italian Army and Navy forces moved against the city. This so called "Bloody Christmas" included bombarding the city and and engaging D’Annunzio’s nationalist volunteers in street fighting. D’Annunzio ultimately surrendered and withdrew, bringing the Fiume Endeavor to an end.
