Seppuku, also known as hara-kiri, was a form of ritual suicide practiced in feudal Japan, most closely associated with the samurai warrior class. It involved self-disembowelment with a short sword, traditionally followed by decapitation at the hands of a trusted attendant, and was performed to restore honor after defeat, disgrace, or failure to uphold one’s duty. Originating in the 12th century, seppuku became formalized with strict ceremonial procedures, often including the wearing of white robes, writing a death poem, and having witnesses. While it was sometimes ordered as a punishment, it could also be voluntary, serving as an ultimate expression of loyalty, courage, and personal responsibility in bushidō, the samurai code.
