The Battles of Khalkhin Gol were a series of clashes between the Soviet Union and Mongolia on one side and Imperial Japan on the other, along the disputed border between Mongolia and Japanese-occupied Manchuria. What began as skirmishes escalated into a full-scale conflict, culminating in a massive Soviet offensive led by General Georgy Zhukov in August. Employing superior armor, artillery, and encirclement tactics, the Soviets decisively defeated Japanese forces, inflicting heavy casualties and destroying much of Japan’s 6th Army. The outcome ended Japanese expansion into Mongolia and convinced Tokyo to turn its ambitions southward in the Pacific, while cementing Zhukov’s reputation as a brilliant commander.
