After the clashes at Lexington and Concord, British troops began their retreat to Boston under constant attack from colonial militias. As they withdrew along the narrow country roads, thousands of Minutemen and local militia from surrounding towns poured in, firing from behind trees, stone walls, and buildings in a relentless guerrilla-style assault. The retreat turned into a desperate struggle for survival, with the British suffering heavy casualties and only avoiding disaster when reinforcements under Lord Percy arrived with artillery support.
