The sinking of USS Arizona occurred during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. At approximately 8:06 AM, an armor-piercing bomb penetrated the ship near its forward magazines, triggering a catastrophic explosion that tore through the battleship and engulfed it in flames. 1,177 crewmen were killed, nearly half of all American casualties sustained during the attack. Unlike many of the other damaged battleships, Arizona was considered beyond repair and was never returned to service, with much of the wreck and the remains of hundreds of sailors left where it sank. Today, the USS Arizona Memorial stands above the wreck in Pearl Harbor, serving as a lasting memorial to those who died aboard the ship and to the attack that brought the United States into World War II.
