Nearly 130 years later, after England's Lionesses won the European Championship for the first time in 2022, more women and girls are playing football in England's public parks and football grounds than ever before.
It all started here, in Alexandra Park, where the first British women's football club game was held in 1895. In this video, Alexandra Park FC reenacts the 1895 'North' vs 'South' game in historic costume as well as a 1917 match between Dick, Kerr Ladies Home and Away.
